WHAT FELLOWS ARE SAYING
“The Kneeland Project exceeded my expectations. I am able to take tangible and real ideas that I can implement into my news organization today, tomorrow and throughout the year. I made connections with like-minded leaders that deal with the same real issues that I do. I highly recommend The Kneeland Project and am proud to be a Fellow. Even after 30+ years in this business, I still have much to learn and share.”
“I came to Kneeland to become a better manager and came to better understand that starts with better management of myself. Self-care is something we all think about, but rarely focus on. Kneeland taught me to schedule my life: to make me, my friends and family a priority. If we don’t unplug and take time for ourselves, we’re going to burn out, if we haven’t already. And, that’s not good for our teams, families, career or health.”
“This immersive experience is designed to challenge leaders as we navigate the evolving demands and incredible responsibilities of good journalism. It’s inspiring to know what I can bring back to my newsroom. My goal is also the help others learn and incorporate the ideas and approaches we have acquired at The Kneeland Project.”
“The Kneeland Project has easily been the most enlightening and empowering few days of my career. I left Austin with planned, achievable ways to make my newsroom better and to improve my work-life balance. In addition, the relationships I’ve made here will offer another great resource throughout my career. I’d highly recommend the experience for any friends or coworkers.”
“Kneeland is a great combination of learning, sharing and doing. But it’s possible the most valuable part is the networking. How often do you get to put aside the competition and work together to make journalism better? I will recommend Kneeland to news manager now and for years to come. I hope it remains as vibrant as it is now – no matter the challenges our business encounters. Thank you for this opportunity.”
“Inclusion, fairness and diversity are works that are often thrown around by corporate execs. However, as a black and Japanese man who has worked in the #2 market and at the national level, those words seem hollow. However, The Kneeland Project has given me the hope that those words are more than buzz words.”
“Other news manager trainings often only scratch the surface when it comes to discussion of issues facing newsrooms, often because they’re forced to teach to the least-experienced people in the room. Kneeland sets the bar high, provides a deep dive in a thought-provoking way, and clearly sets its expectations high. I kept hearing about how great it is – it’s way beyond that!”
“From coaching to ethics to research and so much more, The Kneeland Project gave me tangible ideas and techniques to be a better journalist and news director.”

The chance to hear from leaders in progressive thought is unbelievably valuable. Reading conference calls and other groups are good. But personal interaction with a group of real peers helps uncover questions you don’t even think about in your daily grind. We all have a lot of the same issues no matter the region, market size or history. Thinking at 30,000 feet is key to coaching success.
